When we found out we were expecting twins, one of the first things I did was to seek out the experiences of other twin mamas to try and prepare for what was coming. Even though our previous two additions were only 4 months apart, thanks to adoption, I knew that having twins was going to be a whole new experience.
There were SO many things I was excited for, for sure, but there was one other twin mom in particular, who I happened to already be following on social media, who often referred back to back to the first year with her twins as “the worst year of her life.” Now I get where she was coming from: her twins are older now and she was almost certainly trying to to be an encouragement to those who were in the thick of dealing with twin babies. But for me, who had yet to even have my babes, it put a cloud of fear over what my life was going to be like once they came.

I’m not sure if was because of her posts or in spite of them, but after our twins arrived, each day/week/month we made it through, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief that it was most certainly not going to be “the worst year of our lives.” Don’t get me wrong, it was INTENSE ha! The sleepless nights and frequent nursing, the feeling that I couldn’t do much else during the day but juggle babies, the amount of time it took to go anywhere with all six kids!

But their sweet faces and soft snuggles made it so much more bearable! The absolute gratitude I had for them even existing (when we weren’t planning any having any more bio kids) helped me to have a spirit of calmness and peace, even when my body was exhausted. I know everyone’s experiences are different, and I don’t mean to put that other mama down! But I do hope this encourages anyone with fear of what’s ahead with the addition of new little ones. It can be pretty amazing. It has certainly been a wonderful experience for us, and I wouldn’t change a thing!
